SCOOTERS & BIKES

If your child comes to school on a bike or scooter please would you remind them that they must not ride it around the playground before and after school.

PARENT & STAFF ASSOCIATION CHEESE & WINE EVENING

On Thursday 8^th March  (7.00 – 8.30 p.m.) we would like to invite you along to a Cheese & Wine Evening to find out more about the PSA.  The number of members has dropped over the last couple of years and we would really like to recruit some new members.  The PSA have raised a lot of money for school and provided us with equipment and resources we would not be able to fund ourselves.  We realise that not everyone wants to attend lots of meetings, but may be interested in occasionally helping at events.  This will be a very informal evening, a chance to sit and chat and find out how you could help and its FREE OF CHARGE!!  Please complete the tear off slip and return to school if you are interested in attending this event.

PARENTAL SURVEY

Thank you to all parents who have completed the survey – this information is important to us as we look to further improving our school.  The final day for returning the survey is Friday 17^th February.

LOST PROPERTY

All lost property will be displayed on Tuesday and Wednesday next week in the dining hall.  We will be disposing of any unclaimed items on Thursday.

CROSS-COUNTRY

On Thursday 16^th February a team of 12 children from Year 5 & 6 will be representing school in the Wigan Schools’ Cross-Country Championship at Leigh Sports’ Village.  We wish them luck.

RUGBY

Last week our rugby team won the Deanery High School’s Rugby Festival.  Well done to the children who represented Mab’s Cross.

HALF TERM

Just a reminder that we break up for half term on Friday 17^th February and return to school on Monday 27^th February.

SATS

The Year 6 SATs tests will take place during the week commencing Monday 14^th May.  Other year groups will be taking tests at different times in May and June.

HOLIDAY LIST

We have had several enquiries about school holidays for the academic year 2012/13, therefore I have attached the holiday list to the back of this newsletter.  This can also be viewed on the school website.

WIGAN & LEIGH HOSPICE

Thank you to everyone who supported the Wigan & Leigh Hospice Appeal before Christmas.  The school raised a total of £101.50.

Y6 AFRICA PROJECT

As part of their African topic Year 6 children would like to sponsor an African animal.  If each Year 6 child donates £1 the classes would be able to go ahead with this joint project.  Donations can be brought into school and given to the class teachers.

HEAD LICE

As you are aware from previous newsletters we have had several cases of head lice in school.  To help prevent the spread of head lice we would ask that long hair is tied up for school.

TRAINERS

It has been noticed that several children are wearing trainers for school.  Please could I remind parents that school shoes must be worn at school.  Thank you for your support with this matter.

CHRISTMAS FAIR

Thank you to everyone who helped make the Christmas Fair a wonderful success.  The final amount raised was £2700.

PROCEDURES FOR SCHOOL CLOSURE IN THE EVENT OF SNOW

If it is necessary to close the school due to snow the following procedures will apply:

-      An announcement will be made on the school website.

-      Smooth FM and Wish FM will be informed and they will make regular announcements.

-      We will text parents at the earliest opportunity, therefore please ensure we have your latest mobile number in order that we can update our records.

TEATIME WITH SANTA

On Thursday 15^th December Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 will be holding a ‘Teatime with Santa’.  If your child is taking part they will need to bring their party clothes in a named plastic carrier bag to change into just before the end of school.

NATIVITY PERFORMANCES

Mrs Broadhurst’s, Miss Gilham’s and Mrs Martin’s class will be holding their Nativity performances next week.  All parents have been sent an invitation for their child’s performance; if you have not received one please ask the class teacher or call in at the office.

KEY STAGE 2 CELEBRATIONS

Y3 Christmas Party                Tuesday 13^th December

Y4 Christmas Party                Friday 16^th December

Year 5 will be holding a cinema afternoon during the last week of term

Further details of these events will be sent out by the class teachers.

YEAR 6 VISIT TO ROLLER RINK

As part of the Christmas festivities Year 6 will be going to the Roller Rink on Wednesday 14^th December.  Please ensure all permission slips and payments have been sent into school before the day.  The children will need to wear their school sweatshirt and tracksuit bottoms / casual trousers.

STRING PERFORMANCES

Year 4 children will be celebrating their musical achievements with a string  performance on Thursday 15^th December in the dining hall.  All Year 4 parents are welcome to attend at the following times:

Mrs Housley’s / Mrs Smith’s class     3.00 – 3.30 p.m.

CAROL CONCERT

This year’s Carol Concert will take place in school on the afternoon of Monday 19^th December and the morning of Tuesday 20^th December.  More details will follow shortly.

LOST PROPERTY

All lost property will be put out in the dining hall on Monday & Tuesday of the last week of term.  Any items left after this time will be disposed of over the Christmas holiday.

WEBSITE NEWS

We hope you have had time to look at the new website and that you will find it increasingly informative as more information is added.  After the Christmas holiday we will be putting all our fortnightly newsletters onto the website and will no longer be sending home paper copies.  This will help us reduce the amount of paper we use, which is important to us having achieved our Eco-Schools’ Green Flag Status.  If, however, you would prefer a paper copy sent to you please fill in the slip below and return to school before the Christmas holiday.

OUTSTANDING DINNER MONIES

May we ask that all outstanding dinner monies are paid before the end of term.  If not, your child will need to bring a packed lunch after the Christmas break.

CHRISTMAS BREAK

3.30 p.m. and re-opens in on Tuesday 10^th January.

SCHOOL CLOSURE DAY

As a result of teacher and support staff industrial action on Wednesday 30^th November the school will be closed.  The decision to close the school is never taken lightly, but in this instance, where staff have elected to take lawful industrial action, we have no choice but to take appropriate steps to ensure the health and safety of the children.  We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.

CHRISTMAS FAIR

We look forward to seeing you at our Christmas Fair this evening, doors open at 5.30 p.m.  We would also like to take this opportunity to thank you for all the donations you have sent in over the past week.

MORNINGS

In line with government guidance on safeguarding, and to ease congestion in school, we would ask that you encourage your children to come into school by themselves.  There are a lot of children in school and it is very difficult for the children to move around school, and for the staff to greet the children and start the day promptly, when there are too many adults in the building.  If you have a message for the class teacher please pass this on to a member of staff at the gate or, if you do need to speak to the class teacher, please call in at the office to make an appointment. Thank you for your understanding.

LATENESS

We have noticed recently that there is an increasing number of children arriving late for school.  The school gates open at 8.45 a.m. and the day starts at 8.55 a.m.

CHILDREN IN NEED

Thank you for all your donations for Children in Need.  The final figure raised was £782.04 – well done to everyone!

PARENT AND STAFF ASSOCIATION

There will be a PSA meeting on Monday 28^th November at 6 p.m. in school.  All new members will be made very welcome so please come along.

WHEN SANTA GOT STUCK UP THE CHIMNEY!
As part of our Christmas celebrations for Key Stage 1 we have arranged for a theatre company to come into school with this production on Thursday 8^th December.  Theatre groups can be expensive but they are a wonderful experience for the children.  We are therefore asking for a donation of £2 per child (or £3.50 per family) towards the cost from Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 parents. Please would you send your donations to school in an envelope by Tuesday 6^th December.  Thank you.

YEAR 2 SHARING SESSION

Just a reminder that on Monday 5^th November at 3.30 p.m. Year 2 parents are invited into class with their child to look at their work.  Please come along.

HEAD LICE

We seem to have an increasing number of cases of head lice reported.  Please would you ensure that long hair is tied back and that you check your child’s hair regularly to help stop head lice spreading.
