SATS

Year 6 will be taking their SATs over the next two weeks on the following days:

Monday 14^th May                  Reading

Wednesday 16^th May            Mental Maths & Maths Paper A

Thursday 17^th May               Maths Paper B

Wednesday 23^rd May            Writing

Thursday 24^th May               Writing

Some children will also be taking Level 6 SAT papers on Monday 21^st & Tuesday 22^nd May.

Years 2, 3, 4 and 5 will be taking tests during the week commencing Monday 28^th May.

During these times please ensure your child is in school on time, and early bedtimes also help.

PSA

The next Parent and Staff Association meeting will be held in school on Tuesday 15^th May at

6.30 p.m.  Please come along to this informal meeting, new ideas are always welcome.

OLYMPIC TORCH

As you are probably aware the Olympic Torch will be coming through Wigan on Thursday 31^st May.  Due to the fact that the town centre and surrounding areas will be busy in the lead up to the procession (approx.4.30 p.m.) we have decided to close the school early at 2.30 p.m.  This will allow time for all children to be safely picked up before the area becomes too busy.  Also, it will give opportunity for the children to be taken by parents to a viewing point to see the event.  The nearest viewing point from school will be opposite the shopping precinct at Scholes.

FRANCE MEETING

There will be a meeting for all Year 5 parents and children who are going on the French trip on Tuesday 22^nd May at 6.30 p.m.

OUTSTANDING DINNER MONIES

Please settle any outstanding dinner monies as soon as possible.  If monies owed continue to be outstanding we will have to refer these to the local authority debt recovery team.

ROAD SAFETY

We have noticed that several children in Year 5 and 6 who come to school by themselves are not using the school crossing patrol and are dodging between cars on Standishgate.  Please would you talk to your child about this if they make their own way to school.  Thank you.

INHALERS

If your child has an inhaler in school, please would you ensure that it is ‘in-date’ and is clearly named with their name and class.

LOST PROPERTY

We have a lot of lost property in school at the moment.  Please ask your children to check the lost property box if you know they are missing an item of clothing.

SCHOOL UNIFORM

After careful consideration the Governing Body have decided to make some minor changes to our school uniform policy.  School uniform plays a valuable role in contributing to the ethos of a school and setting an appropriate tone; it can instil pride and support positive behaviour and discipline, as well as encouraging identity with the school community.

We understand that many of you may have bought uniform recently and therefore would not want to replace this before September.  If this is the case please continue to send your child in this uniform and when it is replaced later in the year simply replace with the new version.  When you read the uniform list below you will see that the changes are only small ones.

As you can see the changes are minimal, but we feel they will have a positive impact. 

The only uniform rules we would like to enforce from Easter are that no earrings or trainers are worn for school.

SPORTS’ RELIEF

Thank you to all the children who took part in Sports’ Relief Day.  The school raised £447 which will go towards helping people living incredibly tough lives, both at home in the UK and across the world’s poorest countries.

EASTER EGG BINGO

Last Friday evening the PSA organised an Easter Egg Bingo.  This was a tremendous success and everyone who attended enjoyed the evening. A grand total of £336.24 was raised.

BOREATTON PARK (YEAR 6)

All children going to Boreaton Park will need a packed lunch on Wednesday 18^th April.  Children on free school dinners will be provided with a packed lunch.  The cost of school dinners will be £2 payable on Tuesday 17^th April.

HEAD LICE

We seem to have an increasing number of cases of head lice reported.  Please would you ensure that long hair is tied back and that you check your child’s hair regularly to help stop head lice spreading.

INFANT BALLS

We have noticed that a lot of infant children have started to bring balls into school to play with on the yard.  Some of these balls are quite heavy and we are concerned that a child may be hurt. Therefore, we have decided to ask children in the infants not to bring balls and we will supply soft balls or tennis balls at break times.

SPARE CLOTHES

Please could we ask that if your child comes home from school in a change of clothes that these are washed and returned to school.  Thank you.

EASTER BREAK

We break up for Easter today and return to school on Tuesday 17^th April.  We wish you all a Happy Easter

EASTER EGG BINGO

Just a reminder that the PSA will be holding an Easter Bingo Night on Friday 23^rd March from 6p.m. – 8p.m. in school.  Please come along to support this new event.

SPORTS’ RELIEF

On Friday 23^rd March the school is taking part in Sports’ Relief Day.  The money raised through this event is spent on helping people living incredibly tough lives, both at home in the UK and across the world’s poorest countries in exchange for coming as their favourite sport’s star or to dress in sporty clothes.  Some children will also be taking part in sport’s activities during the day – Years 5 and 6 will be taking part in a ‘penalty shoot-out’.

PARENTS’ EVENINGS

Just a reminder that Parents’ Evenings are to take place on Wednesday 21^st March and Wednesday 28^th March.  You should have now received a letter from the class teacher with your appointment time.

CROSS – COUNTRY

We would like to congratulate Lewis Belshaw, Jacob Dugdale, Jacob Green, Georgia Walsh and Matthew Holliday for being chosen to represent Wigan schools in the Greater Manchester Championships last weekend.  Mr Wilson and Mrs Barton accompanied the team and were very proud of the children.

PARKING

To ensure the safety of the children in school please would you not stop on the zigzag lines outside school, or use the car park to drop your children off.  For those of you who are not aware, we have an agreement with Tesco to enable you to park to either pick-up or drop off your children.

UNIFORM

It has been noticed that several children are wearing trainers for school.  Please could I remind parents that sensible flat school shoes must be worn.  There are also many children wearing larger earrings – small studs only should be worn for school. Thank you for your support with this matter.

PARENTAL SURVEY

Thank you to everyone who completed the survey before half term – below is a summary report of the results. This provides us with valuable information on how to further improve our school, and we will be discussing your comments and suggestions in both staff and governor meetings this term.

PARENT & STAFF ASSOCIATION CHEESE & WINE EVENING

On Thursday 8^th March (7.00 – 8.30 p.m.) we would like to invite you along to a Cheese & Wine Evening to find out more about the PSA.  The number of members has dropped over the last couple of years and we would really like to recruit some new members.  The PSA have raised a lot of money for school and provided us with equipment and resources we would not be able to fund ourselves.  We realise that not everyone wants to attend lots of meetings, but may be interested in occasionally helping at events.  This will be a very informal evening, a chance to sit and chat and find out how you could help and its FREE OF CHARGE!!  Please complete the tear off slip and return to school if you are interested in attending this event.

LUNCH BOXES

If your child brings a packed lunch to school would you please ensure it is in a lunch box.  Several children have been bringing their lunch in a carrier bag, which is then left littering the school.  We have also found that children cannot find their own lunch as there are too many bags the same.  Thank you for your help with this matter.

YEAR 5 LITERACY

Mrs Smith would like her Literacy group to visit http://www.oxfordowl.co.uk or follow the link on the school website to access a range of exciting audio books for KS2.  They can also take part in the ‘100 Word Challenge’ at http://100wc.net .

PUMPS

We have recently noticed a lot of marks on the hall floor which are proving difficult to remove.  These are being caused by children wearing trainers for P.E. and after-school clubs. Therefore we are asking children to wear pumps, rather than trainers, for indoor P.E. lessons and clubs.

LOST PROPERTY

To help us return lost property items to the children would you please put your child’s full name in all items of clothing.

ROBIN PARK (YEAR 5)

We have recently noticed a drop in contributions towards the cost of transport to Robin Park for P.E. lessons.  We understand that this is a voluntary contribution but without this we would find it difficult to fund the transport every week.  Therefore we would like to remind you that we do request a donation of £2.00 per week.  Thank you.

On Thursday 16^th February a team of 12 children from Year 5 & 6 will be representing school in the Wigan Schools’ Cross-Country Championship at Leigh Sports’ Village.  We wish them luck.

RUGBY

Last week our rugby team won the Deanery High School’s Rugby Festival.  Well done to the children who represented Mab’s Cross.

HALF TERM

SATS

WIGAN & LEIGH HOSPICE

Thank you to everyone who supported the Wigan & Leigh Hospice Appeal before Christmas.  The school raised a total of £101.50.

Y6 AFRICA PROJECT

As part of their African topic Year 6 children would like to sponsor an African animal.  If each Year 6 child donates £1 the classes would be able to go ahead with this joint project.  Donations can be brought into school and given to the class teachers.
